Festivals to enjoy on the Costa del Sol

The gateway to the Mediterranean Sea, the Costa del Sol is one of the most visited tourist destinations in our country. A true paradise full of splendid beaches and an unbeatable climate all year round.

However, its appeal is not limited to its beaches. The Costa del Sol is also an essential destination to enjoy genuine folk festivals, where religious roots are mixed with authentic Spanish traditions.

A region full of very special festivals, culture and folklore

There’s a wide range of festivals. That’s why we’ve collected some of the most important and representative festivals from a culture which is internationally recognised for its unique colourfulness and popular devotion which make it a true gem of Spanish culture.

Malaga Carnival

It will be held from 15th to 23rd February next year. Among its main attractions is the performance of murgas, comparsas and agrupaciones (groups of singers and dancers). At Malaga Carnival you can’t miss the Battle of the Flowers on the last Saturday of Carnival or the Burial of the Anchovy on the last Sunday.

Malaga Fair

A true spectacle of colour, music and authenticity held in August. The Malaga Fair is an event full of centuries-old traditions which have become the so-called Great Summer Festival. Fireworks, processions and celebrations where you can enjoy attractions, live music, good wine and the region’s best traditional dishes.

Marbella Carnival

It’s one of the most famous parties on the Costa del Sol. The Marbella Carnival is celebrated in February or March and has an wide programme of activities in which both locals and visitors participate: group competitions, humour parades, speeches by children, parades, a children’s chirigotas contest and a chorizada (chorizo barbecue). A festival for the enjoyment of young and old alike.

Andalusia Day

Andalusia Day takes place on 28th February, in commemoration of the granting of Andalusian autonomy. In addition to the official ceremonies, it’s the perfect occasion to enjoy local culture and cuisine.

Feast of Our Lady of the Candelaria

It’s celebrated in the town of Benagalbón, in the month of February. The feast of Our Lady of the Candelaria is one of the most famous religious celebrations where, in addition to the traditional procession, you can also enjoy music concerts, communal meals, competitions and dances. At the end of the festival, the statue of the patron is placed in a local church, dating from the 16th century.

Easter Week in Malaga

One of the best ways to enjoy authentic Easter holidays: processions full of passion where the different brotherhoods and sisterhoods parade their statues, accompanied by incredible devotion and human warmth. You can admire unique elements such as traditional mantillas, enjoy heartfelt saetas or taste exquisite torrijas (like French toasts). On Holy Tuesday, the procession of the Virgen de las Penas with its splendid mantle of flowers.
