Discover Malaga through its museums

Malaga, on the Costa del Sol, has become one of the most important destinations to enjoy the best of culture due to its many impressive museums. 

Currently, approximately 40 visitor centres and museums scattered throughout the city can be visited, dealing with topics as varied as air transport, bullfighting, Holy Week and archaeological finds. We suggest a route where you can enjoy national and international cultural gems:

The Picasso Museum

There’s nothing like starting with the museum dedicated to this amazing artist, who came from this city and was an advocate for the existence of this cultural space. You can see 233 of Picasso’s works distributed in 11 rooms, through which you can explore 80 years of his artistic life. 

The museum is located in the Palacio de los Condes de Buenavista. 

Open from Monday to Sunday at 10:00. The closing hours vary depending on the season: at 20:00 in July and August, at 18:00 between November and February and at 19:00 the rest of the year. Admission is free on Sundays after 18:00.

The Museo Casa Natal de Picasso 

The best way to learn a bit more about Picasso. Very close to the Picasso Museum, in the Plaza de la Merced, is the artist’s birthplace. There you can admire sketches of many of his well-known paintings, such as Las Señoritas de Avignon, as well as a large number of his personal belongings.  

Open every day from 9:30 to 20:00, including public holidays. Except on 24th and 31st December, when it opens until 15:00, and on 1st January and 25th December, when it’s closed.

Museo Carmen Thyssen

 

Located in the Villalón Palace, it’s considered to be one of the best museums in Malaga. An impressive tour of Andalusian and Spanish painting between the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection has 285 permanent works belonging to the baroness widow Carmen Thyssen, as well as other temporary exhibitions. 

It opens from Tuesday to Sunday between 10:00 and 20:00, except 25th December and 1st January 1, when it’s closed. Admission is free on Sunday afternoons.

The Russian Museum of St. Petersburg

 

The State Russian Museum is located in the old tobacco factory in Malaga. It contains an impressive collection of Russian artefacts dating from the fifteenth to the twentieth centuries. In addition, it has an auditorium, projection rooms and reading rooms where various activities for all ages are held

It opens from Tuesday to Sunday from 9:30 to 20:00, except 25th December and 1st January. It can be visited for free on Sundays after 16:00. 

Other museums, such as the Pompidou Centre or the Centre for Contemporary Art, also give you the opportunity to enjoy the finest art and also make Malaga a city where you can live a unique cultural experience through its museums. A route full of art which will make your getaway a special trip.
